Berlin based producer Robot Koch was kind enough to agree to an interview for us. This man is no stranger to the scene, being the producer for the band Jahcoozi and already has a string of releases. His music is a blend of dubstep, garage, 2-step and a number of other genres all mashed up into a sound which really is something else.

How long have you been producing, and what got you into it in the first
place?

I started playing drums in a death metal band when I was 14....did that
for a while, like playing in bands and stuff. all sorts of music from
jazz to metal.

But I got into producing via DJing in the late 90s. hiphop albums like
36chambers by wu tang or check your head by the beasie boys sparked my
interest in making hiphop and electronic music.

Have there been any really big inspirations over the years who you feel have made an impact on your music?

Many records from the above mentioned to john coltrane, moondog, tim
buckley, early mr oizo and anti pop consortium.

Being from Berln, your obviously used to a vibrant and exciting music
scene. How was it breaking out into the berlin scene, and was it hard or did you find
your self with a lot of support?

I kinda grew into it, been here for over 10 years now and I was one of
the first making non techno and electronica infused hiphop out here, by
now there is a big dubstep and electronic hiphop scene out here but
back in the day it wasnt like that so i kinda built it with other cats
like modeselektor, CLP, RQM, and Jahcoozi...

Your Jahcoozi's producer, but do you prefer doing your own thing or
working with them?

I like both, working in a band is a different experience and its more
about compromises sometimes, with my stuff its 100 % what i want to do,
but with jahcoozi we come up with stuff that i would not have done like
that if ihad done it alone, and that can be really cool too...

Anyone you think people should be looking out for in the second half of
2010?

Eskmo and loops haunt are my fave new producers right now. also feeling
this kid jai paul, think he is gonna be huge....so watch out.

Just a quick technology question, do you use alot of hardware or mostly
software or a mix of both and how do you think this effects your productions?

I use ableton on the software tip but i just edit and process tons of
live recorded stuff with it. I love the balance between analog and
organic stuff and the digital manipulation of that. i record everything
from guitars to flutes and also some old analog synths and then i take
the sessions to ableton and mess with them. I dont use any fancy FX
really, just normal EQs, compressors and reverbs nothing crazy, I'm a
editing freak so i really go into micro-editing of audio files...

Ok, so i'm heading to Croatia to play along side some of the biggest names in the scene at the moment at the all mighty Outlook Festival. This years is looking like a big one, with the event being hold in a ruined nineteenth century fort, and the line up bigger than ever!

I think the highlights of this one will be Roska, Digital Mystikz, 2562, Dub Boy (look out for this guy), Pinch, and the mighty Engine-Earz Experiment.

Engine-Earz experiment, for those of you who haven't heard, is the brainchild of Prashant Mistry, combining music from all over the world to create a unique, live dubstep project like no other. They choose to ignore the boxes of 'scene' and 'style' chosing instead to think simply about 'music'. Have a quick flick through their Boomkat catalogue, I'm sure you will be impressed.

Coming up in Bristol is Applepips label night at Basement 45 feat Instra:mental, Scuba, Appleblim and many more. I was lucky enough to be at the party back in October which saw Blim and T++ blow the tunnels apart. This is set to be a really good night.

I've been going through a mild musical revolution the last two months, listening to a lot of funky, tech dubstep and nice deep tech house, and doing loads of shopping on Boomkat. I've just been finding so many amazing mixes and tunes around seemingly all at once, that I've been overwhelmed a bit to be honest, but it's definitely a good thing, I think the last time I got this excited about dance music was when I first started DJing out about 3 years ago. But there were twice as many tunes left out on this one than those that got in, so hopefully plenty left over for the next one.
Yea enough chatter and that, basically I've just gone from some dubstep which is actually slowed down a fair bit so it becomes more downtempo breaks so I could fit it at the start (those Pangaea tunes are so heavy they both crept in), into some nice beats courtesy of Geeneus, Kode 9 & Hot City, then on to some grooving tech house, before dashing back and forwards between some funky & beats and then off into mini rave territory. Check it out and let me know what you think, I'm pretty happy with it to be honest which is pretty rare for me these days...

If you have any sense, then this week you be mostly listening to this mix from the excitingly anonymous Sbtrkt lifted straight from the Fact podcast. Yea alright so I'm a bit late and it's two weeks old or something, but like every other, I only remember to check out the Fact podcast when someone reminds me, which is why I thought I should remind you.

Anyway, literally no idea who Sbtrkt is, but considering the relatively impressive amount of coverage he's getting already, (Benji B is all over him, and he recently played Get Familiar @ Fabric) then I reckon it has got to be an alias of an already established artist, although I could be wrong and he's just got lucky...

Hello, I'm Jung. I DJ all over the place playing a myriad of genres depending on what the crowd decide they fancy, but these days it's mostly a fine paste consisting of tech house & electro with a pinch of breaks and plenty of funk.

I've also got (if I may say so myself) a pretty slick podcast on my own site over at muujun.co.uk, so get over there asap and check it out, you can probably get a better idea of what I'm about if you listen to the mixes on there, despite most of them being over a year old. Hopefully I'll remember to start doing an episode every month soon
Also just want to say cheers to the whole Bassache crew for letting me get involved.
Anyway I think as good an introduction as any is to let you in on a few tunes that have been absolute weapons for me over the past few months no matter when I've played them, some old some new, but always do the business.

Firstly is a wicked tune from Bingo Players that, dropped at just the right time, seems to ignite literally any dance floor. It's probably one of the best tunes I can think of to take a set from the first few warm up records into dancing territory...

The next would actually probably the completely batshit Giggle Riddim by bassline genius Piddy Py, which is perfect for giving the people who look like they are about to walk to the bar a 'get the fuck back on the dancefloor' nudge.

A good one to get the party started is an excellent remix one from one of my favourite artists of late, Radioclit. Sick grooving bassline, vocal that everyone can sing along to, what more can you ask for?

Dizzee Rascal - Stand Up Tall (Radioclit Mix)

The next two are actually pretty classic to me, pushing on a good few years now, but then with timeless records does age really matter.
Joakim and M.A.N.D.Y are two artists that literally can do no wrong in my book, so lovely remix is just as good as it should be, utilising that infamous eerie vocal right in the middle of the breakdown before jumping back into the groove, sheer brilliance. It could probably even pass for a Tiefschwarz remix really, which is obviously a good thing

Lastly is a stormer from Trentemoller, which has got one of the best building breakdowns that Tiesto wouldn't play. Basically it just goes off and makes you want to jump around like you've got rabies

Sup, my name's James, this is my first post on here so big up to Ryan for getting me on board! Thought I'd introduce myself...I DJ and produce under the name ARCTIC, co-own a new label called Andromeda Records and also produce as one half of the Gamblers

I figured I'd begin my first post with news on the forthcoming release from Loefah's sick sick label, swamp 81. After having a dark and deadly halfstep release by Kryptic Minds, Loefah follows up with two killer tunes by man of the moment, Skream, whom is again proving to be one of the most innovative producers in the scene. Audio is up on the label's myspace, with both tracks in my opinion clearly demonstrating the dark, stripped back and spacious sounds which are frequently lost in tunes today. A couple months back, Blackdown did a pretty sick write up/interview on Swamp 81, stating Loefah's intentions towards his label. You can check that here. I've always been a fan of Loefah and especially his track selection whenever I've seen him out, definitely buying this follow up release as soon as. Stoked!

On a completely opposite style of dubstep, (for the jump up heads) I'd highly recommend purchasing the latest release from Rottun Recordings. Check previews here, serious next level sickness from Datsik, Excision and Flux Pavillion.

Finally, seeing as everyone else has been uploading fresh mixes, I've been working on one recently which I'll also upload shortly, it's been a while since my last few so keep checking back and it'll be up soon...

If i could describe these guys in a word, it would be heavy. They've just done a digital release on there own label Andromeda Records and all i've been dropping all three of these tunes and they have been completely destroying the dance floor!

Gamblers is comprised of two brothers, Harvest, a Jump up dnb producer and Artic a minimal/dubstep producer. This really explains the hard bass lines and beats in all three tunes, bringing a real jump-up feel to the tunes.

So last night Swindon saw BRYAN G & JAKES descend upon the rehab nightclub for a heavy night of drum and bass and dubstep.

Jakes smashed it when he came on, everyone itching for dubstep after hours of drum and bass, and he did not disapoint. The best dubstep act i've seen in swindon so far, i thought i'd do my first post in a few weeks about him.

My good friend Jung has made a new mix for your listening pleasures.

'Yea so I have finally pulled my finger out and done a new mix after god only knows how long. I hope this is the start of me actually doing them regularly as it is actually quite good fun once I get in to it.

I must say it was probably worth the way as I am actually pretty pleased with it. Lovely funky DFA stuff at the start, which is one of my favourite labels at the moment, into some nice tech and electro, with a dash of wonk, with a splash of dubstep at the end. That Piddy Py tune is one of the craziest things I have heard in ages.

Anyway, you know the drill by now, give it a listen and let me know what you think.'
